Summer Apprenticeships with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission

Become part of a large and growing sector of the construction industry preserving Pennsylvania’s treasured historic buildings.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) is sponsoring its 5th annual summer apprenticeship program to introduce students and recent graduates of post-secondary trade schools, technical colleges and other training programs and others with building trades experience, to the preservation and traditional building trades needed to preserve Pennsylvania’s historic places.

PHMC and several partner organizations and companies will be offering paid apprentice positions for 12 weeks in the summer of 2010 at locations throughout Pennsylvania. The apprenticeships will include a free training program with an introductory one-day seminar in historic preservation and two days of hands-on training by master craftsmen in various preservation and traditional trade skills.

Interested students should review the attached list of positions below and contact the the representative for those they are interested in for more information or to schedule an interview. All hiring decisions are the responsibility of the company or institution hosting the individual apprenticeship. The hiring period will end on April 30th 2010.

SUMMER 2010 APPRENTICESHIP POSITIONS

Historical Restorations

Location: Kreamer, Snyder County (project locations throughout central PA)
Wage: $10.00 / hour

Position Description
:
Apprentice will engage in all aspects of log and timber frame restoration at projects throughout central Pennsylvania.

Fairmount Park Historic Trust

Location: Philadelphia
Wage: $12.00 / hour

Position Description:
(two positions available)
Apprentices will work under the supervision of the Trust’s team of architectural conservators and preservationists to perform a variety of preservation carpentry projects including: window sash and jamb repairs, shutter repairs, flooring and porch repairs. The apprentices will also perform masonry repairs including: re-pointing stone and brick, and patching and cleaning stone. Apprentices will also assist staff with painting and other general preservation maintenance activities. Apprentices will have the opportunity to work on National Historic Landmark buildings and many other architecturally significant
structures.

Jamison Masonry Restoration, LLC

Location: Oreland, southeastern PA
Wage: $13.00+ hour based on experience

Position Description:

Apprentices will work on a diverse range of masonry restoration projects including repointing, and stone and brick facade restorations.

Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Preservation Construction Section

Location: Daniel Boone Homestead, Birdsboro, Berks County
Wage: $12.00/hour

Position Description:

This apprenticeship will provide an opportunity for apprentices to learn about historic preservation and the traditional trades through fieldwork, shop work, research and other project work under the supervision of master preservation craftsmen. The areas of work will emphasize historic preservation and traditional carpentry skills, but may include historic masonry restoration and other trades. PHMC maintains a number of historic buildings at historic sites and museums throughout Pennsylvania. The apprentices will be engaged in project work at several sites.
