Pennypacker Fellowships:  State Library and PHMC Scholars in Residence Program

The Pennypacker Fellowship/Scholars in Residence program is on hold and is not funded for 2013.

In 2012 the new incarnation of the program, renamed the Pennypacker Fellowship, was made possible through a collaboration between the State Library of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). 

The Pennypacker Fellowship Program supports short-term, full-time research and study in collections maintained by the State Library and at Commission facilities, including the Pennsylvania State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the State Historic Preservation Office, all in Harrisburg, and at many of the Commission’s historic sites and museums throughout the Commonwealth.

The Pennypacker Fellowship Program has a four-fold purpose:

• to promote the interpretation of Pennsylvania history;

• to encourage research that draws upon the State Library and Historical Commission collections;

• to promote the dissemination of research findings to both the professional community of scholars and the public; and

• to develop collegial relationships between scholars and Commonwealth staff.

Stipends are awarded for a period of up to eight consecutive weeks at the rate of $400 per week. Residencies may begin May 1 of the year in which application is made and must be completed by April 30 of the following year.

Eligibility The program is open to all who are currently engaged in or who plan to conduct research on Pennsylvania history, including academic scholars, public sector professionals in history-related disciplines, independent scholars, graduate students, writers, filmmakers, and educators.
