Forensic Services Training Schedule

This Training is taught by the Bureau of Forensic Services and will require registration by completing a Forensic Training Registration Application . Upon completion, the application can be emailed to SP, PSP FORENSIC SERVICES (ra-pspforensicservices@pa.gov) or mailed to:

Upon receipt of the application, the applicant will recieve a registration confirmation/denial email within 15 calendar days.  The training is at no cost to the student.  Lodging and meals are not provided.  All applicants must be law enforcement officers or be an employee of a law enforcement agency with forensic-related duties.


 

 

2014 Fall Training Schedule

 

 

Crime Scene Photography(FULL, but accepting applications for a waiting list.)

Dates:  September 8-12, 2014

Location:  Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC), Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description:  This course provides training in the basic principles and fundamentals of a 35mm camera/digital camera, lens selection, use of electronic flash, macro-photography and documentation.  Other topics will include the storage of evidentiary photographs, possible media loss, and future S.O.P. considerations.

 

Basic Crime Scene Investigation(FULL, but accepting applications for a waiting list.)

Dates:  September 22-October 3, 2014

Location:  Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC), Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description:  This is an introductory course into crime scene investigation.  Course instruction provided in the areas of Physical Evidence, Crime scene Management, types of evidence found at the crime scene, proper collection techniques, submissions to Regional crime labs, and courtroom testimony.  Each student will participate in the mock crime scenes.  Prerequisite for registration: Crime Scene Photography or equivalent PSP approved training.

 

Shoe and Tire Impression Evidence

Dates:  October 15-17, 2014

Location:  PSP Departmental Headquarters, Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description:  This course provides instruction in the history of shoe and tire impression evidence, search, documentation, and the collection of the impression evidence.  Students will participate in several workshops including photography, measuring, and casting impression evidence. Prerequisite for registration: Crime Scene Photography or equivalent PSP approved training.

 

Advanced Latent Print Identification

Dates:  October 27- November 7, 2014

Location:  Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, Manheim, PA.

Course Description:  This course provides a refresher in the foundation of friction ridge analysis with respect to the history and science of fingerprints, pattern recognition and comparison techniques.  Students will conduct challenging latent print examinations and comparisons.  Each student will be required to successfully complete a written examination and competency comparison test.  Students will also complete a mock case and participate in a mock trial.  Prerequisite for registration:  Basic Fingerprint ID Course or equivalent PSP approved training.

Dates: January 22-24, 2014

Location: PSP Departmental Headquarters, Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description: This course provides training in the photographic documentation of latent print evidence.  The training will include: instruction on photographic equipment, lighting techniques, alternate light source photography, and proper scale documentation.  Practicum included.  Prerequisite for registration: Crime Scene Photography or equivalent PSP approved training.

 

Basic Fingerprint Comparison(FULL, but accepting applications for a waiting list.)

Dates: February 24-28, 2014

Location: Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, Manheim, PA.

Course Description: This course is a basic introduction into the science of friction ridge analysis and fingerprint identification.  This course provides the foundation in friction ridge analysis covering the history of fingerprints, pattern recognition and comparison techniques.  Practicum included.

Dates: March 26-28, 2014

Location: Penn Dot Laboratory, Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description: This course provides training in the proper sequencing of latent print processing, utilization of an alternate light source, and practical experience with the use of reagents in the development of latent prints.  Requirement: Student must bring a small flashlight.  Student must wear safety goggles, provided at Laboratory, at all times while in the Laboratory.

Location:  PSP Departmental Headquarters, Harrisburg, PA.

Course Description:  Course instruction provided in the areas of buried body recovery scene (comparable to a Forensic Anthropology Dig) with “Total Station” mapping, Forensic Entomology, which includes collection of insects and their arthropod relatives that inhabit decomposing remains to aid an investigation, and the photography of luminol.  Each student will participate in this “hands-on” course.  Prerequisite for registration: Crime Scene Photography and Basic Crime Scene Investigation or equivalent PSP approved training.
