Firearms Information
The Pennsylvania State Police Firearms Division is part of the Bureau of Records and Identification and is charged with maintaining records related to firearms licensing and transfers.
The Firearms Division also operates the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS), which is used by firearms dealers to verify an applicant’s eligibility to legally purchase a firearm in just a few minute's time.
Update:
The PSP Firearms Division is in the development phase of a complete re-design of the Pennsylvania Instant Check System. The new system will offer web access to initiate background checks and provide the option for electronic submission of surcharge forms and fees. PSP will provide updates and outreach to firearm dealers and sheriffs as we approach the implementation date of the new system.
The PSP Firearms Division would ask that all gun shows, auctions, raffles and sales be reported to the PICS Unit, preferably at least 30 days in advance of the event. This advance notice allows us to plan for additional staffing as needed, in order to serve you with the utmost efficiency. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at 717-705-8843.
In an effort to keep firearm dealers up to date and informed on matters which may affect their business, we now post informational updates on this website as needed. To view the updates, scroll down on this page until you see the section entitled "Licensed Firearm Dealers and Sheriffs," and click on that link.
In instances where "critical information" needs to be provided, in addition to the website, mass mailing will be used to ensure distribution to all licensed dealers.
