Waiver Training



The Act at 71 P.S.ยง2107 gives the Board discretion, with the review and approval of the Commission, to set criteria allowing a reduction of training hours for deputy sheriffs with requisite prior education, training or experience.

1. The Board may grant a full waiver of basic training upon application by a deputy sheriff who has served a full, four-year term as sheriff within Pennsylvania.

2. The Board may grant a partial waiver of training upon application by a deputy sheriff who meets one of the following categories:

a. Successfully completed a recognized Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) Act 120 basic training course as documented by a copy of grade transcripts and certification of completion from Act 120 Academy.

b. Experienced as a municipal police officer in Pennsylvania as documented by a copy of either current or past MPOETC certification card and a letter from a current or former department verifying employment and status upon separation.

c. Current deputy sheriff who was employed as a Pennsylvania State Police Officer as documented by a copy of academy graduation certificate and notice of retirement.

3. In order to be certified by the Board, a deputy sheriff with either a full or partial waiver of basic training, shall meet all of the following conditions:

a. Submit an application (PCCD Form - 105) along with documentation of:

i. a current nationally recognized basic first aid certification card.

ii. a current nationally recognized CPR certification card. (Child, Infant, and Adult)

iii. a current (within one year of the date of the application) police firearms range qualification certificate with score, level of proficiency, and signature and certification number of firearms instructor who conducted the qualification.

4. A deputy sheriff who is granted a partial waiver of basic training is required to undergo a basic training waiver course of 80 hours.

Requirements

Active Deputy Sheriff - A person whether full-time or part-time, who is titled, sworn-in or authorized to act as a deputy sheriff or who performs the duties of a deputy sheriff.

Must submit Basic Training Partial Waiver Application - PCCD 105 to the Deputy Sheriffs' Education and Training Board.

Must attend training within one year - A newly hired deputy sheriff is required to undergo training.

Registration for Waiver Training can only be completed after the Partial Training Waiver Application is approved. Registration is completed electronically, using the online enrollment process, by accessing the Deputy Sheriff Information System (DSIS).
