Project Management Training
The OA Office for Information Technology provides project management training and tools for commonwealth professionals. Courses require the approval of either your supervisor or agency training officer to attend.
Both IT and non-IT professionals, regardless of whether they have a project management background, can train to become commonwealth project managers.
Courses can then be scheduled through through LSO, available under "My Training" at www.myworkplace.state.pa.us (learn more about LSO). Follow these instructions to find project management courses in LSO. The Basic Project Management Training is scheduled to be available by the end of June 2013.
Project management training for commonwealth employees will utilitize both online (Web-based) training and instructor led training. Initially, employees will participate in the online Basic Project Management Training. At the conclusion of this training, participants are required to complete a 35 question assessment. A score of 80% or higher allows the student to progress to the Project Management Workshop, which is classroom-based and instructor led. At the completion of the workshop, the employee may take the Advanced Project Management Training.
Basic Project Management Training – The purpose of this training is to familiarize prospective project managers with basic project management concepts, and expose them to the commonwealth’s project management process and supporting documents for the management of projects.
This training is in the final stages of development and is scheduled for release in June 2013.
Advanced Project Management Training – Advanced Project Management Training will consist of two elements: further skills training in certain aspects of project management and training to help the individual understand their personality type and how it affects them as a leader. The combination of both hard and soft skills will develop a well-rounded individual to handle the complex environment of managing projects.
The skills training for the advanced project management will provide insight into the more advanced topics not covered in the Basic Project Management Training, and go into more detail for those advanced topics briefly mentioned in the Basic Project Management Training. These topics include:
• Scope Management
• Cost Management
• Human Resource Management
• Risk Management
• Procurement Management
• Quality Management
This will be a series of online training sessions designed to discuss each topic in isolation.
This training has yet to be developed.
The soft skills portion of the advanced training will focus on helping the individual understand him or herself in order to be a more effective project manager. This will be accomplished through personality type training, which helps a person understand their natural personality make-up and the impact it has on how they manage. This training addresses the following topics:
• Identifying your personality Type
• Type and Project Management
• Type and Leadership
• Type and Teams
• Type and Communication
• Type and Change

The following represents the instructor-led project management training options:
Project Management Workshop – The purpose of this training is to provide the student with the ability to experience the job of a project manager before they are place into that role and, for existing project managers, provide greater exposure to OA/OIT’s project management processes and documents. This workshop offers a “hands on” opportunity to utilize the terms, processes and documents learned about in the Basic Project Management Training. This training occurs in a controlled environment and under the supervision of an experienced project manager.
