A major breakthrough for our community was because of the Healthy Steps Program.  Our staff opened a center on a Saturday to integrate Latino and non-Latino participants. It is an exciting new beginning for our Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and the elder Latinos of our service area. It was one of the most wonderful programs that we have had. One gentleman approached me afterward and thanked me for helping the Latino community.

"This program was just the incentive I needed to exercise more and reevaluate some things at home to reduce my risk of falling."

Ninety-nine percent of the participants stated they had learned a lot compared to what they knew before they attended the workshop.

Ninety-six percent reported that they took what was learned and applied it at home. Ninety-two percent said it changed the way they think and act when moving about both in their homes and in public places.

Participants stated that they felt that they had learned something from this program and would recommend it to others.  Some participants reported making the following changes:  modifications to their homes to make it safer such as grab bars and indoor and outdoor lighting; increased the amount of time that they go out and do physical activity; began having conversations with their physicians regarding medications and medical conditions; changed their shoe style to help with preventing falls; and others stated that they are less fearful of falling, while one individual has managed to decrease the number of falls that they were having.
