Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, enacted by Congress in December 2007, enforces mandatory federal requirements for promoting the safe use of pools, spas/hot tubs and preventing entrapment.  Administered by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the act specifies that on or after December 19, 2008, swimming pool and spa drain covers available for purchase in the United States must comply with the American National Standard ASME A112.19.8 – 2007 Suction Fittings for Use in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs.

Additionally, it requires all public swimming pools and spas to replace suction drain covers with new anti-entrapment drains or covers meeting the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007 Standard by Dec. 19, 2008, and requires an additional layer of protection for pools or spas using a single drain outlet to any pump.  What this means for public swimming pool owners is that new anti-entrapment drain covers will need to be installed on all pool suction drains. Very few drain covers installed prior to 2009 meet the new standards.  Please consult with your pool vendor or a pool design specialist to ensure that your pool or spa meets all the provisions of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
