The Physical Activity Program coordinates state activities by expanding and integrating physical activity initiatives into other chronic disease programs to promote health and prevent chronic disease incidence, morbidity, and mortality. While continually evaluating the physical activity status of all Pennsylvanians, the Program then collaborates with other chronic disease programs within the Department of Health, including nutrition, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, injury prevention, and cancer control. The Physical Activity Program activities focus on increasing moderate levels of physical activity for all Pennsylvanians through increasing awareness of the benefits, increasing awareness of the Surgeon General’s recommendation of at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week for better health, and promoting behavior change.
The new 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the first recommendations by the federal government since the 1996 Surgeon General's Report on physical activity, are being released October 7, 2008. You can access them now on the web site of the Department of Health and Human Services. http://www.health.gov/paguidelines/
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports - The Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (Council) was established through an Executive Order issued on September 24, 1997. The Council’s mission is to improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians by providing leadership that promotes physically active lifestyles and links families, communities, schools, worksites, health care and media.

PA Youth Nutrition and Fitness Fact Sheets The Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity added obesity-related questions to the 2006 Youth Tobacco Survey which was conducted during the fall and winter of the2006-2007 school year. The obesity-related questions asked high school and middle school students questions about their nutrition and physical activity knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. The highlights were compiled into a fact sheet intended to inform program staff, researchers, healthcare providers, local health departments, and community partners. This data will be used as baseline data. View facts sheets below.
