Medicare provides health insurance coverage to individuals age 65 and older and to certain persons with disabilities. For individuals with low incomes, a special Medical Assistance program called “Healthy Horizons” is available to assist with payment of Medicare premiums. To qualify for help under the different categories within the program, a person’s income must not be above100-135 percent of the Federal Poverty levels. There are also certain established resource requirements. APPRISE is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help older Pennsylvanians with understanding Healthy Horizons and Medicare. Counselors are specially trained volunteers who can answer your questions and provide you with objective, easy-to-understand information about Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medical Assistance and Long-Term Care Insurance.
